Fast Fact Friday: New SLP CPT Codes Are Coming in 2027

A smiling nurse in scrubs with a stethoscope around her neck sits and talks with an elderly patient.

In August, we shared information about the upcoming replacement of CPT code 92507 (Treatment of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing disorder; individual), scheduled to take effect January 1, 2027.

With the CMS Final Rule expected in November, now is a good time to revisit the new codes and review what we know today.

New CPT Codes Replacing 92507 Effective January 1, 2027
Fluency Treatment

·     92654: First 30 minutes

·     92655: Each additional 15 minutes

Speech Sound Treatment

·     92656: First 30 minutes

·     92657: Each additional 15 minutes

Language Treatment

·     92658: First 30 minutes

·     92659: Each additional 15 minutes

Combined Speech Sound and Language Treatment

·     92663: Each additional 15 minutes

What We Know Today

While these new CPT codes will change how services are reported, they do not automatically determine reimbursement rates or payer coverage policies. Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers will each establish their own payment methodologies and coverage decisions.

At this time:

·     92507 remains in effect through December 31, 2026

·     The new CPT codes are scheduled to take effect January 1, 2027

·     CMS is expected to publish the 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule in November

·     Additional guidance regarding reimbursement and implementation is anticipated as payer policies continue to develop

What Should Clinicians Do Now?

Nothing changes today. Continue using 92507 as appropriate through the end of 2026 and stay tuned for additional guidance as more information becomes available.

Fast Fact Friday Takeaway: The coding structure for individual speech-language pathology treatment is changing in 2027, but CPT code 92507 remains active through December 31, 2026. For now, continue current coding practices while we are monitoring future reimbursement and implementation guidance.
